Healthy body advises public to be vigilant of rising foodborne illnesses

The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) has advised the public to be vigilant as new figures show infections from a type of bacteria that can cause severe stomach upsets rose by 26% in England last year.

The latest annual data released by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) showed the ‘significant’ rise in illness from Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) in 2024. STEC are bacteria that can cause gastroenteritis, with symptoms ranging from diarrhoea and stomach cramps, to vomiting and dehydration.

Soil Association calls on Government to make minimally processed foods more accessible

The Soil Association has created a petition, which currently has over 20,000 signatures, that calls on the Government to make minimally processed foods accessible and affordable to everyone. 

A new diet study shows that Government healthy eating advice must ‘catch-up’ with the latest science and warn people against ultra-processed diets. Researchers at UCL found that when given nutritionally matched diets, participants lost twice as much weight eating minimally processed foods compared to ultra-processed foods (UPFs).

British Egg Industry Council issues urgent warning to UK food businesses

The British Egg Industry Council (BEIC) has issued an urgent warning to UK food businesses following concerns over the rising number of imported eggs being seen in foodservice. 

With egg imports rising since the start of the year, there are concerns that an influx of eggs produced to lower food safety standards than the British Lion could see an increase in the type of food safety outbreaks that have been regularly seen across Europe.

Caterers urged to complete survey on new healthy food initiative

A new idea to improve nutrition and access to healthy food through a completely different funding model is looking for public sector catering support to attract funding.

Called Balanced Bites, and developed by Dr Ifeyinwa Kanu, who is a leading food systems thinker and innovator and chief executive of IntelliDigest, it proposes using salary sacrifice as a way of driving beneficial change in the food system.

Foodservice price index rises in June as inflationary pressures build

The UK foodservice sector saw a ‘significant’ resurgence of inflationary pressures in June 2025, the latest CGA Prestige Foodservice Price Index reveals.

All ten categories of the Index recorded month-on-month increases and nine experienced year-on-year inflation amid widespread uplifts in costs. The total basket saw a strong month-on-month increase of 2%.

IGD predicts food inflation to peak at 5.1% in 2025

IGD’s latest Viewpoint report warns that retail food inflation is set to peak at 5.1% in late summer 2025, outpacing general inflation.

This rise is expected to place further pressure on both households and businesses, as the UK economy continues to grapple with sluggish growth and persistent price pressures. Looking ahead to 2027, the report offers cautious optimism, forecasting a gradual decline in food inflation to 1.8% by mid-2027.

Public sector employers urged to support new catering training programme

‘Forward-thinking’ public sector catering employers are being encouraged to support a short, entry-level, Level 2 skills programme for adults, that has been designed specifically for public sector and corporate catering environments. The scheme is initially targeting NHS sites in London.

Culinary Medicine UK, the Craft Guild of Chefs, and CCC (Capital City College) Westminster are jointly developing a ‘skills bootcamp’ programme that starts in September.
